Text Box: Dr. Rosa Gil and Assemblyman Peter Rivera Get the Party Started at Bronx Unity Day Comunilife’s President and CEO Dr. Rosa Gil and Assemblyman Peter M. Rivera were among the dignitaries at Bronx Unity Day, Saturday September 13, 2008. The annual party was created by Assemblyman Rivera as a way to celebrate the diversity and strength found in the many different cultures who call the Bronx home. Beautiful weather contributed to the program of lively entertainment free rides and food and inspiring speeches. Besides games and rides for the younger members of the crowd, there were over 15 booths featuring information and educational materials on a plethora of exciting and innovative programs available to local residence. Dr. Gil helped to answer questions posed by parents and teenagers at the Comunilife table along side her two newest Program Directors, Ms. Elba Acosta of Proyecto Vida and Ms. Nisa Raushenberg of Life is Precious. Life is Precious and Proyecto Vida are Comunilife’s two newest programs, working together to diminish the alarming rate of Latina teenage suicide in the New York City Area. In addition to the two new programs, the other important programs and services offered by Comunilife, from housing to mental health outpatient clinics were well represented. All in all, it was another successful and informative day for all!

Text Box: “Life is Precious”- One of Two New Programs Launched in 2008 March of this year saw the launch of Comunilife’s “Life is Precious” program, created to help diminishing the prevalence of Latina teenage suicide. One in six Latina girls between the ages of 12 and 16 will attempt suicide, according to the Center for Disease Control. The startling statistic places these girls in the group with the highest percentage of suicide attempts in the nation. Unfortunately, in New York, the rate is even higher than the national average! The new program already boasts 30 girls who are engaging in multiple activities. While the program continues to expand, we are doing our utmost to obtain the necessary monies needed to fully fund the program. If you would like to help, please contact Program Director Nisa Rauschenberg at 1-917-548-2848 or check out the program on our website at www.comunilife.org. Imagine how many young lives we will save once this program is full funded!

Text Box: Director of Housing Development Hard at Work on New Clinic For Comunilife’s Director of Housing Development, Mr. Ernesto Vigoreaux, quiet moments are a thing of the past. Mr. Vigoreaux is leading the effort to see that Comunilife’s new VIDA Guidance Center, opening at 4419 Third Avenue in the Bronx is ready on time. The new complex will boast a beautiful open mezzanine, an internet café and other new amenities. Everyone is looking forward to the Opening Day Ribbon Cutting ceremony but perhaps none more so than the man who is doing his utmost to make the dream a reality. We just hope he realizes that when he is done with the clinic, we’ve got a lot more work for him to do. Hang in there, Mr. V, retirement is right around the corner, in 30 years or so…
